Researchers have used a tool called 'Tobii Eye Tracker'. Like its name says it tracks eye movement and can collect usage stats for web pages by seeing where an eye focuses on. It also records mouse movement on that same web page.
There is a new idea called the "Click Shift Theory". It suggests that humans on Search Engines are again shifting back towards using Free Organic results rather than the Paid Results, PPC, Adwords etc.
See how the colour over-lays are very bias towards the free results on the left hand side, while on the right side, where the paid ads are, there is hardly ANY activity.
Going by this research the First Organic Result (the #1 free listing) gets 22 TIMES more clicks than the #1 Paid ad. The Second Organic Result gets 10 TIMES more traffic than the #1 paid ad.
What does this mean?
If the stats are to be trusted then Google is going through a cycle of use that makes Free Search Listings far more valuable to the user than Paid Search.
So what should I take from this?
The moral of the story is to keep constantly updating your site and links.
It takes time but it far more valuable than the short term paid Ads alternative.
